Brewday - Pastry Stout!
Pastry Stouts have become a very popular beer style among craft brewers.
My selv, I haven't known how to approach this beer style yet, so when I saw the kit "Dessert In A Can - Salted Caramel Choc Chip Cookie" from Amundsen Brewery I took the opportunity and bought two kits.
In this video there is a quick walk through of the beer style and the beer kit. and then I brew it.

    Have you tried WLP800 yeast (or Wyeast 2001-PC as it is exactly same)? WLP800 it exact Pilsner Urquel yeast strain so would it be better than WLP802? Should i use WLP802 or WLP800?

    Awesome video! Thank you so much for sharing. I bought a Braumeister in 2012 when it was a real innovation in the homebrewing scene. German engineers are amongst the best in the world, but alas they can’t see any imperfections from their designs and produce. Worse than anything else, they don’t listen to customers and they tend to become very arrogant when trying to cover up their flaws. Your video definitely encouraged me to buy a Brewtool system next, which looks far more slick and efficient than a Braumeister. I have also done some prep-work on the company and apparently Brewtool team goes the extra mile to listen to customers and try and accommodate their requests. Pricewise, it looks very competitive too! Particularly when compared to an obsolete and overpriced system such as the Braumeister. Thanks again; you are awesome!

    Hey my friend, question if I may ask: do you “fill” the counter flow chiller before the mash/boil? So the air is out of it? Cheers 😊

      Hey @homebeerbrewery 😃 No I don’t. During mash and boil, up until sanitation of the chiller, I keep only air in the chiller. I circulate the wort bypassing the chiller. Have you started brewing on the B80 yet?

      Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I did brew my first batch, and I noticed huge air bubbles coming out of the chiller during the start of the sanitation, wort splashing in the air 😅 My chiller is underneath the troll table. Not sure how I am going to fix this… cheers

      Ah, yes. That happens 😃 If you open the valve slightly and slowly the bobbling will be dampened. But sooner or later you will get the steam hat and steam condenser and this will no longer be a problem with the hat on 😃

    Nice brew. I would like to taste some :-) A question: what is the purpose of the miniUni on the wall behind the B80 and how is it mounted? It does not look like the default wall mount (17:37). Cheers!

    Great video. Maybe you should mill the malt with 1,3-1,4 mm so you avoid the tickness/slightly stuck during the mash. We know that different brand have different maltsize and so on…

    Great video. Good Job. Just want to comment on something significant. You were talking about Preboil volume 49 liters, and 1-2 liters in the hoses. There is not more than 3 desiliters of wort in the hoses. When chilling/transferring maybe 1-2 liters, depending on lenght of hoses off course. But hoses around tank at preboil is not. So you had 49.3 liters, not 50-51 liters. This off course impact gravity.

      Hey, you are probably right. I just opened the right side valve after filling the tank once, and saw the level drop about one litre. But after the chiller is also filled, I guess (not measured) it’s about two litres.

      Har ikke opplevd det selv, så mitt beste tips må være å ta vare på en større mengde og håpe at ikke alle dør 😀 Hos meg er 6 mnd null problem, og ett år har også gått, men da har det tatt lang tid å komme i gang.

    Fant denne på norbrygg forum (søk: Beergass fra Brewshop), det er viktig å ikke ha karbonert brygget med CO2 helt til 1bar trykk om du har det kjølig. gassvolum er ikke likt på romtemperatur og kjøleskaptemperatur.       Hei, det gledes å høre 😊 Det er 2 tomms port i bunn av både MiniUni og stor Uni, så man kan koble på akkurat det samme på begge tankene. Men som du nevner, høyden på bena må jo være tilpasset.

      No, not at all. Would definitely not recommend it all over the world, but here in Norway we have very good drinking water on tap

      Yeah I called it an outboard motor as a joke. Like the ones boats use. Guess the correct term would be external heater or heating element 😊

    I did a similar recipe. Just finished off the keg. Definitely drinkable but it was very plain and slight "vinyl" tast early on. Ended up adding some dry hops just to make it interesting. Those aged out pretty fast too. Id be happy to have success with any pilsner. Seems like the simplest beers are the hardest. My ipas and imperial stouts turn out great.

    Hello TheNextBatch, I'm following your channel with great interest as I'm about to order a Brewtool B40 pro. I have a few comments or suggestions for improvement regarding your brewing process: - Oxygen input: You use the circulation manifold on one side to give the wort as little contact with the air as possible. On the other hand, you pull the mash basket out of the brewing kettle in one go and then start sparging. Your wort splashes down from above and has plenty of contact with oxygen. With my old "Maischfest" from Klarstein, I have solved this by only pulling the basket out piece by piece using a pulley so that the bottom of the basket remains in the wort and then adding the sparging water in portions and then transporting it back up a bit. Only at the very end, when hardly any wort is dripping out, do I remove the basket completely. - Saccharification test with iodine: Do you not do this at all? - Measuring the density before boiling: Do you not carry this out at all? Brewfather provides corresponding data for comparison in its app. Apart from that, I like the way you brew and your "brewhouse" fills me with envy. Good brew, Holger

      Hey Holger! Thanks for you feedback! You are right about the inconsistency regarding the lack of LODO when I raise the basket too quick. I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but in the latest brews I have actually done it the way you describe. I have a winch hanging from the roof that makes it possible for me to lift the basket a notch at a time, so I have been keeping it as close to the wort level as possible up until the end of the sparge. Good spotted from your side! I did the iodine test a few times in the beginning of my home brewing career, but I found this to be unnecessary because I rather like to mash for longer then an hour to be on the safe side. Most often i mash for one and a half to two hours on the B80, and on my old Speidel Braumeister I almost always mashed over night - yes, like 8 hours! 😀 I think you also can be pretty sure all the starch is converted when the wort is really clear. I can understand commercial breweries do the iodine test because there time is money, but as a home brewer time is not that critical - at least not for me! 😀 About the density testing I most often do this after mash/pre sparge, after sparge/pre boil, and after the boil to get the OG. I sometimes don't include all these tests in the videos as I think the videos already are long enough, and I cant include every little thing I do, but maybe I should at least include them in the graphics. Being really consistent on doing all these SG tests and adding them in Brewfather is actually how I built up my B80 profile in Brewfather. I really like the Brewtools brewing machine, so if you are considering buying one I can highly recommend it! But it takes a few brews to get the hang of it! 😀 In the beginning its not you who owns the BT, its the BT that owns you! 😜 Also, building up a good brewhouse takes years! Mine certainly didn't look like it does now at first! Good luck as a future BT owner! 😀

    Ideally, the cfc should be mounted horizontally rather than vertically on the wall. Otherwise, the wort won't drain properly. Wort should enter at the top and drain from the bottom. Otherwise, wort will remain in the lower sections of the loop / and/or remaind cleaning solution.

    Använd risskal du kommer inte ångra dig, blir mycket bättre flöde genom malten. Förövrigt kanonvideo blir nog inköp av brewtools i höst

    Great video, cheers. I always perform a D-rest about 10 days into fermentation for two days. Am I wasting my time doing this?

      Hey, you are not wasting your time doing a diacetyl rest at the end of fermentation. I also do it by bumping the temperature up to 19-20C when the FG is a few points away 😊

I had the German broadcaster ARD visiting my brewery doing an interview of me about the huge interrest in home brewing in Norway, and the interviewer told me that the interrest in Germany is very low. He thought it was because the low beer prices in Germany don't inspire people to brew them selvs. Prost! 😀

    Maybe the indescribable taste in the commercial beer is the preservative or the heat-treatment? After two years of brewing I have a hard time accepting commercial beer with preservatives added. The heat-treated beer can also be a challenge.

    Hi, may I ask you what rail model did you mount on the ceiling to allow your troll to slide ? I'm looking for a similar solution but am not sure about the rail specification (weight, etc.)
